Chapter 6: The Viral Kiss
Lyle lowered the phone and grinned at them in the dark.
"That'll do," he said, and shut the door.
Bryony lay under Holbrook with her mouth still on his, and neither of them moved.
Then he rolled off her and sat up with his back to her.
"Thank you," he said, to the wall.
"He filmed it."
"He did."
"What will he do with it?"
"Whatever hurts most," Holbrook said. "Sleep. I'll be on the rug."
She did not sleep.
At four-thirty, she got up and dressed in the cream blouse and went downstairs in the dark, because the first tray of rolls went in at five and she had never missed it.
Holbrook's driver was waiting at the front door, with the car running.
"Mr. Draper's orders," the driver said.
"I said I'd take the bus."
"There's a photographer at the bus stop, miss."
She stared at him.
"There's a what?"
"There's eleven photographers at the bus stop, and six at the bakery."
The car pulled up to Ridley's at ten to five.
Bryony saw RIDLEY'S in white paint on the window, with the lights already on behind it.
Out front, thirty people stood on the sidewalk with cameras and microphones.
When she opened the car door, the flashes started.
"Bryony! Bryony, is it true you've known Holbrook Draper for a week?"
"Is the marriage real?"
"Did you know he was a billionaire when you kissed him?"
"How much is the bakery worth to you, Bryony?"
She stood with one hand on the car door, and flour dust still in her hair from yesterday.
"Who told you that?" she said.
A man with a recorder pushed forward.
"Lyle Draper. He says you planned it. He says you saw the headline about Holbrook's will and you set a trap in the coffee lounge."
"Lyle Draper wasn't in the coffee lounge."
