Chapter 22: The Ballroom Goes Dark
On Christmas Eve at 11:38, I stood by the ballroom wall in the green dress with my own name on my chest.
Hazel had had it cleaned and let out at the hem, and it was only a green dress now.
Across the room, under three chandeliers, Bianca sat at the Thorsby table in black velvet with her father stiff beside her.
She raised her glass to me and smiled.
I smiled back and slipped through the service door.
The corridor was warm and narrow and smelled of bread, exactly as it had on the tenth of October.
A faint green exit sign glowed at the far end.
At 11:40 the chandeliers died.
The gasp from the ballroom came through the wall, and then a laugh.
Then came a hush, as two hundred people waited for something to happen.
I stood in the black with my back against the plaster, counting the seconds.
Then the speakers in the ballroom woke up, and my own voice came through the wall, small and thin and sewn from pieces.
