Chapter 13: Allowed
"I could do secret," Blaine said.
He still hadn't turned around.
"I'm good at secret. I've been a secret from you for two years and from everyone else my whole life. A secret has rules, and an end date, and nobody gets to ask what you're doing with your hands."
Perry stepped onto the rock and sat down two feet away.
He did not touch him.
"And allowed?" he asked.
"Allowed is a house with a lease." Blaine's throat worked. "Allowed is Sunday dinner with the door open, and her chair, and you across the table looking at me. I don't know how to do that."
"You don't have to know," Perry said.
"I'm going to wreck it."
"Why?" Perry asked.
"Because that's what I do!"
His voice cracked off the rock face, and a startled bird went up from the pines.
Blaine pulled his feet out of the water and stood.
He was shaking.
"Look at me. Thirty-one, no home, a duffel bag. I've never kept a thing. I'm the one who goes, Per. You've seen me go."
Perry got up too.
"No," he said. "I've seen you leave."
"It's the same."
"It's not." Perry walked right up to him, close enough to feel the heat coming off. "You leave before something can leave you. That's different. I've been watching it for eight years."
