Chapter 14: Her Sister's File
Ga-eul listened to the whole thing with a wooden spoon in her fist.
Si-woo got as far as the hand between his shoulder blades, and the spoon knocked against the sink.
She put it down very quietly and washed her hands.
"He said lovely," she said.
"Yes."
"That's what he said when he looked at Ha-yun's chart."
Ji-seok was sitting on the floor in his usual place under the paper lantern.
He had not said a word since Si-woo came out of the Bureau.
He had driven them home with both hands on the wheel, and the leather had creaked.
Ga-eul dried her hands, went to her bed, and knelt.
She took out the shoe box Si-woo knew and pulled up its paper floor.
Under it lay a flat grey envelope, sealed with tape that had yellowed.
"I got it out of her locker two years ago," she said. "Before the Bureau cleared it."
"You never opened it?"
"There was a note on the front."
She turned it so Si-woo could read the handwriting.
Open when you can bear it.
"I couldn't," said Ga-eul. "I tried every birthday."
