Chapter 7: The Poisoned Goblet
Every eye in the hall was on me, and I did not look away.
"I carried the pot," I said. "I didn't pour it. Let the cup be tested, here, in front of everyone."
"Insolent," said one of the elders.
"Not insolent," Dashiell said behind me. "Correct."
He stepped around me and took the cup from the floor with two fingers.
He did not smell it himself.
"Fenn," he called toward the kitchen door. "Come out here."
Fenn came out wiping his hands, and he stopped short when he saw the crowd.
"You have the best nose on my staff," Dashiell said. "Tell the hall what's in this."
Fenn took the cup.
He sniffed once, and then again, and he frowned.
"Soapwort," he said. "Maybe a little castor. It's a purge. It would turn your stomach inside out, but you'd have to drink a gallon of it to die."
Lavinia's sobbing broke off, just for a second.
"It's poison," Honora said.
"It's what you take on purpose when you've eaten something bad," Fenn said stubbornly. "My grandmother gave it to the dog. I know it."
"And who put it in the pot?" I asked.
Nobody answered, so I kept going.
"The tea left the kitchen with a clean pot, and Fenn will tell you that. The sugar came from the pass. Somebody lifted that bowl and carried it up to table one before I did."
"I did," Fenn said, suddenly pale. "Lavinia came back to the kitchen with the sugar bowl for her mother. She said she'd bring it herself."
"That's absurd," Honora said.
"It's what I saw."
