Chapter 19: Two Plates

The host thanked him, and the show cut to a weather map.

Nobody in the diner said anything.

Then the old man in the Steelers cap cleared his throat.

"Well," he said. "That's a man who's in love with you, honey."

"That's what I got out of it too," said a bus driver.

"You don't know that," I said.

"I've been married forty-one years," the old man said. "I know a man who won't answer a question because the answer's too big."

Gretchen pointed her spatula at him.

"You're my favorite customer."

"I'm everybody's favorite customer."

I'd never once called him.

I'd never had to.

He'd always just been there, at the end of a street or the end of a pass.

He answered on the first ring.

"Darby."

"Come to the Bluebird tonight," I said. "Eight o'clock. Use the back door."
