Chapter 5: Ambrose's Ledger

Ambrose's POV

The inn at Overend Landing has six rooms and a bar that closes at nine.

I took the room at the back, facing the lake, and did not take off my coat.

My wife was a mile away in a cottage I could not enter, and I could feel her all the way there.

Fear first.

It sat under her ribs, steady and low.

Under the fear was a quiet, new warmth that wasn't hers or mine.

I put it down to grief.

My aide called at nine.

I had told him to find out who held the wax, and he had found more.

"The papers were drafted three weeks ago, sir," he said. "The lawyer's file is dated the first of the month. I had it copied before anyone noticed me looking."

"Three weeks."

"Before Lady Linnea did anything. Before there was anything to do."

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"She hadn't asked for a divorce."

"No, sir. Nobody asked. The Council logged it as a precaution."

"Against what?"

"It doesn't say."

I looked out at the lake, which was black and flat, and listened to the ache that was hers.

"Send me the Trust ledger," I said. "Everything with the word severance."

He hesitated.

"There's a file for that, sir. It's sealed. It's been sealed since before you took the crown."
