Chapter 7: Three

"Ask your wife," Cressida said.

She said it lightly, with her chin up, because she had spent two hundred years in rooms where nobody dared to touch her.

Ambrose crossed the diner floor.

He did not touch her either.

He stopped close enough that she had to tilt her head back to hold his eyes.

"You drove here with cuffs," he said.

"They're for her own safety."

"In front of this room."

"Ambrose, darling, I was only following Aunt Ottoline's orders. Linnea is unwell, and the lab said..."

"I heard what the lab said."

He turned to the two nurses.

"Put the cuffs away."

The nurse who held them looked at Cressida.

Ambrose waited.

The nurse put them away.

"Now go outside," he said, "and wait by the car. Both of you."

They went.

The diner was still silent.

The baitseller had stood up.

The waitress had her own phone out, held low and pointed at the whole scene.

"Cressida," Ambrose said, "you said in a public room that my wife was mad. You said it to people who have known her since she was twelve. You said she couldn't be left alone with a phone."

"I was only..."

"You will leave this town today. If anyone from my house sets foot in Overend Landing without my written word, I will treat it as an act against the crown."

She went white under the powder.

"You can't threaten me. I'm your cousin."

"I'm the king," Ambrose said. "And she is my wife."

He said it without heat.

It was worse than if he had shouted.

The old man by the window began to clap, slowly, and then the waitress joined in, and two farmers, and the women with strollers.
