Chapter 18: Escorted Out

Nobody in the boardroom gasped.

I had braced for it, and the silence was worse.

The woman in the red glasses set her phone face down on the table.

"Mr. Stroud sent us a note at nine yesterday morning," she said. "It said he was involved with his assistant and that a photograph might circulate. I read it over breakfast."

I turned my head.

Quentin looked back at me, steady and a little pale.

He had written to the board, and he hadn't told me.

"I thought you'd say I was handling it for you," he said quietly. "So I handled it."

The man by the window snorted.

"If this is the best Mr. Elliston has, I'd like to know why we spent a Thursday afternoon on it."

Merrick hadn't moved.

His phone was still in his hand, and he stared at the nine faces around the table, and I watched him find nothing in any of them.

"Mr. Elliston," said the chair.

"Yes."

"Stanhope's man said it to my face, and I believe him." She laid down her gavel. "As of this moment you are suspended as chief operating officer pending a full inquiry. Security will take you to your office for your things."

"You can't do that without a vote."

"I just did, Merrick. We will vote tonight, by phone, and I'm sure of the result."

He looked at Quentin.

Quentin looked back with his hands folded, saying nothing.

I almost wished he'd say something, and then I understood he didn't need to.
