Chapter 16: Open to the Unit
On Tuesday morning the hospital auditorium was full by nine thirty.
Nurses stood along the walls in their scrubs.
Techs sat on the stairs, and three residents I did not know sat in the back row with their arms crossed.
Dee had traded shifts for half the floor so they could come.
The compliance chair sat at a long table on the stage, in the same gray suit, with a man at each side of her.
The man on her left had silver hair and a surgeon's square hands.
I knew him from the photograph on the donor wall.
Preston's father.
He sat in the center of the dais, and Preston sat in the front row with his lawyer.
"This hearing is open at the request of forty-one members of the unit," the chair said. "It concerns Dr. Preston Gaines. Charge Nurse Faherty will begin."
Dee stood up with the manila folder.
She did not read from it.
"For a year I wrote down what happened to the women who left him," she said. "I have names and dates. I'll let them tell you the rest."
She sat down.
The first nurse who came to the microphone was the one who had gone to the ICU in March.
She was small and stiff, and she gripped the podium with both hands.
"He told the residents I was too uptight to be touched," she said. "He told them after I turned down a second date."
She swallowed.
"I asked to move to the ICU because I couldn't walk past the lounge."
Nobody in the room said a word.
The tall nurse from nights went next.
She did not grip anything.
"He told people what I kept in my locker," she said. "I kept nothing. He made it up."
