Chapter 21: The Charter
"May," I said.
The Master of the Mint put his knife away.
"His Majesty owes the Finders forty thousand marks, Highness. He has for twenty years."
"They lend him their bounty money, and he pays them interest on it, and every year he burns more women to pay them back."
He said it flatly.
"A king who owes that much has very few friends. He likes them better when they have silver."
He rode down the valley that afternoon with his scales and his paper of silver shavings.
The engine kept breathing over our heads all night.
He came back twenty-six days later with the king's charter.
He read it himself, standing on the rim of the stone well in Velde's square, where Kranz had once held up his purse.
The whole town stood in front of him, and a great many people from up and down the valley who had heard there was silver.
The eighteen women watched from the windows of the lodge above the square.
"By the king's grace," the Master of the Mint read, "the town of Velde is made a royal mine town."
