Chapter 9: The Cup

The table burst into noise.

Chairs scraped. Wives cried out. The old capo with the gold watch stood up and shouted something in Italian, and somebody began to clap.

Nino jumped to his feet and pulled Roisin up against him.

"A son," he said, laughing, wild with relief. "My wife is carrying the Brancato heir."

Roisin put her head on his shoulder and smiled down the table at me.

It was a triumphant smile.

She had gotten there first, and she wanted me to see it.

The old Don tapped his cane for quiet and, to my surprise, he was smiling too.

"A child," he said. "A blessing on this house."

Rosalia glided around the table with the teapot in her hands.

"You must drink, cara," she said, in her warm, soft voice. "For the baby. It's my own blend. It keeps the little one strong. I drank it for every one of my own."

She set the cup in front of Roisin and put her hands around Roisin's, folding her fingers over the china.

"Every day," she said. "Promise me."

"I promise," Roisin said.

She lifted the cup to her mouth.

I did not decide to move.

I stood up, and my chair fell over behind me.

I crossed the room, and I knocked the cup out of my sister's hand.

It hit the marble and shattered.

Tea sprayed across the floor and splashed my shoes.

For one second, nobody breathed.

Then Roisin slapped me.

She put her whole arm into it, hard enough that my head turned and my ear rang.

"What is wrong with you?" she screamed. "That's my baby! You jealous, miserable, vicious bitch!"

"Roisin."

"Get away from me! Get her away from me!"

"Poisoner," Rosalia said.

She said it softly at first, and then she said it again, louder.

"Poisoner! She tried to hurt my grandchild! Did you see her? She knocked it out of her hand!"
