Chapter 21: 11:40

The back door of the chapel was the same heavy oak door, with the same brass push bar, worn pale in the middle.

I put my hand flat on it.

Last time I'd hit it running, with my gown around my legs, blind.

This time I pushed it open slowly and walked out into the sun.

The faculty lot was half full.

Professors' sedans in neat rows.

A few families who'd parked where they shouldn't, already loading folding chairs into trunks.

A campus police cruiser across the far exit, one officer leaning on the hood.

My father's head of security near the hedge, his hand going to his ear.

And at the far end of the lot, under the oak trees, a black Porsche with its engine running.

I couldn't see through the windshield.

The sun was on it.

I walked out to the middle of the lane and stopped.

I didn't run.

My heart was slamming against my ribs, but my legs held.

"Brock," I said.

I didn't shout it.

I didn't need to.

The engine note climbed.

Behind me, the chapel door banged open again.

"Annabel!"

Wyatt's voice.

The Porsche came off the curb.

It came straight down the lane, fast, the engine screaming between the rows of parked cars.

A woman by a minivan screamed too.

I saw the officer at the exit come off his hood.

I saw the head of security start to run.

I didn't move.

I wanted every one of them to see exactly what it was aimed at.

Then an arm went around my waist from behind and I was off my feet.

Wyatt threw us both sideways, between a Volvo and the brick wall of the chapel.

We hit the asphalt hard.

I heard his head hit something.

The Porsche went past so close the wind of it pulled at my gown.

It missed us by a foot.
