Chapter 17: Sanctuary

"I'll fight you," I said.

I didn't even have to think about it.

Rhys's hand closed on my shoulder from behind, once, hard.

He didn't say a word.

Rosamund inclined her head.

"Twelve nights," she said. "Wear something you don't mind bleeding on."

I picked up the cask, stoppered it, and tucked it under my arm.

"I'm keeping this," I said to the hall. "For the Moon Court."

Then I walked out.

Twenty Kinloch wolves walked out behind me, and the doors swung shut on three hundred people who didn't know where to look.

Cressida came across the ford the next morning.

I saw her from the kitchen window.

She was alone, wading the shallows in a white wool coat with the hem dragging black water, carrying a suitcase in her good hand.

The dogs went for her and she stood still and let them bark.

Greer came and stood beside me at the window with a mixing bowl on her hip.

"Is that who I think it is?"

"Yes."

"Do you want me to set the dogs on her properly?"

"No," I said. "Let her in."

Cressida stood in the kitchen doorway dripping on the boards.
