Chapter 5: The Market

"Rhys," I said. "Look at me."

He looked at me.

"What was in that letter?"

"Something I need to be sure of before I put it in front of you."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I've got today."

Greer had come in behind us and stopped dead in the doorway, still pulling her sweater down.

She looked at the stove, then at her brother's face, and quietly backed out again.

"I just walked out of a hall full of people who all knew something I didn't," I said. "His mother knew. His father knew. Half the stands knew he was going to do it. I was the only fool standing up there in a white dress."

"I know."

"So don't you do it too."

He put both hands flat on the table and leaned on them.

"Rosamund Stalbridge is a liar," he said. "You know that better than I do. If I tell you what she wrote, and it's a lie, I've put her poison in your head for nothing. I want to know if it's true first."

"And if it is?"

"Then I'll tell you. I swear it."

"How long?"

"Not long."

I took my coat off the hook.

"Where are you going?"

"The Saturday market. Half of Stalbridge sells there. Some of those women knew my mother before I was born. If I'm going to stand up in that court, I need somebody who'll say that stone was hers."

"I'll come."

"No," I said. "You won't. I need them to see me walk in by myself."

He didn't argue.

He just went to the door and held it open for me, and his jaw was tight the whole time.

The market filled the main street of the town down the valley, where the humans lived and both packs traded.

There was a smell of fried dough and woodsmoke, and wreaths and maple candy and knitted hats on folding tables.

Three years in a row I'd had a table at the end of the row, with my honey and my beeswax candles.
