Chapter 9: The Stone Chooses

Three months.

I stood there in the middle of the ring and did the arithmetic.

Three months ago, Rosamund had taken the stone from me at her tea to have it "cleaned."

Two days later, she'd handed me back the little velvet box with a smile, and I'd thanked her.

I had put it straight down into the vault without opening it.

Why would I open it?

It was my mother's box.

It had been empty the whole time.

I looked at Rosamund.

She looked back at me, calm as a pond.

"She gave me back an empty box," I said, out loud. "Didn't you? You kept it from that day."

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"You didn't clean it. You gave it to her."

The elder lifted her hand.

"The stone will answer," she said. "Not you. Cressida Pyle, you first."

I took the chain off over my head.

The moment the moonstone left my skin it dimmed to a dull milky gray.

I held it out across the ring.

Cressida came and took it from my hand with two fingers.

She held it up in front of the whole hilltop and smiled.

Nothing happened.

The stone sat in her palm.

"Give it a moment," she said. "It's cold."

She closed her fist around it.

She held it against her chest, over the scarf, over the red ring underneath.

Nothing.

The Stalbridge side had gone very quiet.

"It knows me," Cressida said, a little higher. "It glowed on me in the Great Hall. Everyone saw it glow."

"Because I was standing ten feet away," I said.

Her face twisted.

She squeezed the stone tighter, and that was when it started.

A thin thread of smoke came up out of her fist.

She gasped.

She didn't let go.

I'll give her that, she was stubborn.

She stood there with her teeth gritted and her knuckles white while the smoke came up between her fingers and the smell of scorched skin drifted across the ring.
