Chapter 11: As a Doctor

The beta called me himself twenty minutes later.

He had never called me in his life.

"Doc." He was out of breath, and I could hear wind and voices behind him. "He won't wake up. He shifted back on his own and he won't wake up."

"Call your new doctor."

"I did. He said to keep him warm and bring him to Mill Street in the morning." His voice cracked. "He wouldn't come up the mountain. He said he doesn't do house calls."

"I'm banned from pack land."

"I know."

"So is anyone I treat on it."

"I know." I heard him swallow. "Please. I'm asking you. The whole pack watched him fall. If he dies on that meadow, it's chaos by morning."

I looked at the grandmother.

She was holding her cane so hard her knuckles had gone yellow.

"Bring him here," I said. "Over the bridge. I'll have a bed ready."

They came in a flatbed truck, fifteen minutes later, with half the enforcers riding in the back.

Jarek was wrapped in a horse blanket.

He was bare under it, the way every wolf is after a shift, and he was pale as candle wax.

The beta and two enforcers carried him in and laid him on our one real bed.

The burned laundress stood by the front desk with her arms crossed over her bandage.

These were the wolves Mill Street had turned away.

Now their Alpha was on a cot in their clinic.

I put two fingers to his throat.

Twenty-eight beats a minute.

Too slow, even for a wolf.

His skin was cool.

His breathing was shallow and long.

"June. Warm saline. Two lines."

"Already on it."

I didn't think about the waiting room on Larch Street.

I didn't think about the ring, or Posy's head under his hand, or the word irresponsible.
