Chapter 23: Jarek Asks
"Why?" I said. "Why now?"
"He didn't tell me," the grandmother said. "He just asked. Then he sat at my table until the sun came up and didn't drink his coffee."
"He has a tox screen in his pocket," I said. "He's had it for ten days."
"I know, girl. I'm not asking you to forgive him. I'm telling you he's started counting."
She got back in her Buick and drove away.
The omegas drove me home in a parade.
I slept nine hours on my father's sofa with my shoes on.
At eight that night I opened the night clinic, with a split back door held shut by a two-by-four and a bungee cord.
The laundress was at the front desk before I got the lights on.
We had eleven patients by ten o'clock.
At ten forty, the bell over the door rang.
Pine and rain.
The waiting room went silent.
Jarek stood just inside the door.
He was alone.
No enforcers.
No beta.
He wore a work coat and jeans, and he looked like he hadn't slept since the scan.
"I need to talk to you," he said.
