Chapter 11: The Tin

They let Dalton walk the length of the hall alone.

He came between the nine kneeling lords with snow on his coat and his hands held out in front of him, and he stopped at the foot of the dais.

He went down on both knees.

"Your Majesty," he said. "I'm Dalton Ravenshaw, Alpha of Cold Fork. I rejected your daughter in childbirth in front of my pack. I'll answer for that however you say."

The king looked down at him without speaking.

"I've brought you something else," Dalton said. "It's in my father's hand."

He held up the folded slip.

A guard took it and gave it to the king.

The king read it once.

His face didn't change, but the paper began to shake.

He read it a second time, and then he lowered it and held it out to me.

"I'd rather you read it than hear it from anyone's mouth," he said.

I took it.

The writing was square and slanting.

I had seen it on pack orders, and once on a birthday card, when I was nineteen and he gave me a warm pair of gloves.

I read it to the end, and my eyes stopped on the last line before his signature.

Girl is not to shift.

The old Alpha had stood on the bank the night I fell through the ice.

He had known, on that night, exactly what I was.

"Waiting for the price," I said aloud. "They were waiting for the price."

"Miriam," Dalton said.

I didn't look at him.
