Chapter 21: Stay

Everybody on those steps went quiet.

Kirsty grabbed Freddie's arm.

Mum put her hand over her mouth.

Lev stood two steps below me, so for once our eyes were level.

He wasn't cold. He wasn't careful. He just looked tired and terrified and like he'd been waiting his whole life for a yes.

"You heard him," I said. "He thinks you'll come home when you're poor."

"I am poor."

"I know. You're useless at croissants, too."

Somebody on the steps laughed.

"Ask me," Lev said.

So I did.

"Stay," I said. "Not for the bakery. Not because Freddie says it's all right, because he hasn't. Stay because you want to wake up at four on Ropery Parade with me."

He came up the two steps.

He took my face in both hands, in front of the whole street and two police officers and a hundred phones.

"I want to," he said. "I've wanted to since the gravy."

Then he kissed me.

Not like graduation night, against the glass, with his father watching through the ceiling.
