Chapter 14: A Mother's Lie
The lawyer was waiting at the gate of Penhallow House with his briefcase held in front of him.
"Mrs. Penhallow instructs that no strange physician crosses this gate," he said through my father's window. "The fifth Rule stands."
Behind us the young doctor stopped her car and got out.
"I am not here to cross anything," she said. "I will wait on this gravel with my phone on."
"Someone with the right to invite me can do it."
In the back seat my grandfather opened his eyes.
"I own this gate," he said, very slowly. "And nobody has ever asked me."
"The head of the house decides who comes in, sir," said the lawyer, and he did not meet his eyes. "The table sits tonight."
My father looked at me in the mirror.
"Tonight," I said.
The housekeeper met us at the door and took my grandfather's arm.
The three of them went up the east stair, with my father on the other side.
