Chapter 20: Family Breakfast
Burke pulled the sheet over us both so fast the headboard knocked the wall.
Footsteps went down the hall in small socks, and the bathroom door shut.
The toilet flushed.
The door opened again, and the footsteps stopped right outside ours.
"Dad?" Junie said, through the wood.
"Yes, bug."
"Frog lady's coat is on the hook."
I put my face into his shoulder.
He was shaking, and I couldn't tell whether it was fear or laughing.
"I know," Burke said.
"Is she sleeping over?"
"She is."
A long pause, and the floor creaked once.
"Okay," said Junie. "Goodnight."
The socks went away down the hall and her door clicked shut.
We lay very still for a few moments, and then we both lost it, silently, into the pillows.
"That's the most dignified I've ever seen you," I whispered.
