Chapter 16: Tiffany at the Door

Perry's POV

Tiffany opened the door of her father's townhouse in a gray sweatshirt, with her hair in a knot and no makeup.

She looked at me, and then at Cosima beside me in Trent's dark sunglasses.

"If this is about the contract, I don't have it," she said.

"It's not," I said. "I need five minutes."

She let us in.

We stood in the front hall, because she did not offer a chair.

I held my phone out to her with the yacht photo on the screen.

"Look at the bracelet," I said.

Tiffany took the phone, and the color left her face slowly.

"That's yours," she said. "That's the Fairchild bracelet."

"Mine is on my wife's wrist."

She looked at Cosima's wrist, and then at the screen, and then at Cosima's wrist again.

"It's a copy," she said.

"It is."

"Who would make a copy?" Tiffany asked, and her voice dropped. "He told me it was for me. He said he would have one made as a surprise, for after we were married."

"Who did?"

"Trent." She shut her eyes. "I sent him my pictures. I have two hundred of them from when Perry's mother let me try it on at sixteen. I sent every one."

"He gave your surprise to the Strand heiress," I said.

Tiffany put her hand over her mouth.

She did not cry, and she did not shout.

She stood in her father's hall and shook.

"I knew," she said through her fingers. "I think I have known for months. I read his text at the club, and I still went home in his car."

"Tiffany."

"Don't. Let me say it." She lowered her hand. "The Friday three months ago, the night of that crash. Trent came to my door at two in the morning."

Cosima's head turned, very slightly, behind the dark glasses.

"He said he hit a deer on the river road," Tiffany said. "He wanted a shower and a drink. I went out to the driveway to move his car, and the front headlight was cracked and the bumper was caved in on the left."
