Chapter 18: Nothing Left
Fabrizia walked past me to the middle of the red carpet and stopped in front of her husband.
She was shaking, and she let me see it, and then she stopped.
"There's an old rite," she said to the gray man. "My grandmother told me about it. A wife may divorce before the table."
"She does," said the gray man, slowly, "if no boss objects."
He looked down the long table.
Nobody objected.
"Then say it three times," he said.
"Ettore Sarto."
Her voice came out thin.
Ettore watched her from his knees, with his ruined wrist held against his chest.
"Ettore Sarto," she said again, stronger.
She took her wedding ring off with her thumb, because it had been loose since October.
"Ettore Sarto, I put you out of my house, out of my name and out of my bed."
She held the ring over his open hand, and she did not drop it into the palm.
She set it down on the carpet, an inch from his knee.
