Chapter 14: Go In
Anders's POV
I heated the kettle three times for her hair.
She had come down the ladder at noon in my henley, with her braid half out.
She sat at the kitchen table with her back to me.
"My scalp smells of beeswax and both of you," she said. "Do something about it."
Mikkel had gone to walk the bluff and give us the house.
He had not said that was why.
I set the basin on the table and turned back my cuffs.
First the left, to the elbow, and then the right.
I had not bared my forearms in front of anyone but Mikkel in six years.
Linnea turned her head and looked at the ring of white marks on my right arm.
She said nothing.
She faced the wall again and tipped her head back for the water.
Her hair was the color of dry cedar, and it hung past her waist when it was loose.
I poured slowly.
The water ran through it and down her neck, and I worked the soap in with my fingertips and watched her shoulders drop.
"You're good at this," she said.
