Chapter 23: The New Paper
Linnea's POV
The clerk came up the north road at eight in the morning in a county truck with chains on its tires.
She was a thin woman of fifty in a quilted coat, and she carried a leather folder in both hands.
She had not slept either.
I could tell by her eyes.
We met her at the kitchen table, the three of us, with our arms bare to the elbow.
The bite marks on mine were already healing into pink crescents.
She looked at the arms.
She looked at the cot with the folded blanket, and at the ladder.
"I have never written a paper like this," she said.
"Then it'll be a first for you," Mikkel said, and poured her coffee.
She almost smiled.
She laid the folder open on the table and turned it to face us.
"The pack has ended the sentence of Linnea Tvedt," she said. "Time served, in full, as of yesterday noon."
"The rule that splits a Warden pair is struck for the north post."
"There is a third line on the register for this post. It is for Miss Tvedt, if she will sign it."
I took the pen.
I signed my name on the third line, under theirs, in the same ink.
Anders signed, and Mikkel signed, and the clerk watched Anders's cuffs turn back from his wrists and said nothing about them.
"The eldest judge asked me to tell you," she said, closing the folder, "that she will expect a jar of honey in the spring."
"From which of us?" Mikkel asked.
"She did not say. I think she meant all of you."
