Chapter 9: The Flat Rock

The steelhead were running, and Mikkel wanted to show me.

He woke me at five and took me down the half mile of dark trail to the river.

We crouched at the edge of a flat gray rock and watched the fish hold in the current.

The rain had thinned to a mist.

The first light was coming up gray over the water.

Anders sat on a log on the bank behind us with a thermos, because it was his turn to keep watch on the road.

"There," Mikkel said, pointing. "See the big one under the cut bank?"

"I see it."

"That's a hen," he said. "She's been in the river four years."

"How do you know?"

"I know a lot of useless things," he said. "It's a gift."

I turned my head, and his face was right there, close to mine, his hair damp with mist and his mouth curved.

I kissed him.

He kissed me back with his hands in the air, held out from his sides.

"You're doing it again," I said.

"What?"

"The thing where you keep your hands off me," I said.

"The judge said."

"The judge isn't here."

"The judge," Mikkel said, "has a very long reach."

I pushed him onto his back.

The rock was cold and wet and he swore, and then he laughed as I straddled his hips.

"Linnea, there's a Warden on the bank."

"I know."

"He can see us," he said.

"I know that too," I said.

"He's. Linnea."

I looked over my shoulder.

Anders sat on the log with the thermos on his knee.

His eyes were on us, steady, dark, and he did not move.

He did not say anything.

I turned back to Mikkel and undid his belt.

"Give me your hands," I said.

"What?"

"Your hands, Mikkel. Put them over your head."

He stared at me.

Then slowly, deliberately, he stretched his arms back above his head along the rock.

I pulled the belt out of his loops.

I wound it twice around his wrists, and buckled it, and drew it tight.

I looped the end around a knob of rock behind his head.

"Too tight?" I asked.

"No."

"Tell me if it is."
