Chapter 7: Brigid

My mother had gone the colour of paper.

"Mama," she said. "You can't be here. You were cast out."

"I was," said the old woman. "And you're the one who got me cast out."

She stopped at the foot of the dais and leaned on her stick.

My grandmother was alive.

I had been told she was dead for as long as I could remember.

I looked at my mother, and my mother would not look at me.

"Brigid Dunmoor," the senior Council member said. "You were banished from Pinecrest eighteen years ago. You have no standing in this hall."

"I have standing in my own chest," Brigid said.

She put her stick against the table, unbuttoned her patched coat, and pulled aside her blouse.

Over her breastbone was a small square scar, and in the middle of it was an empty slot the size of a thumb.

"A blood knife lived there, in the old way, from the day I was born," she said. "Dunmoor women have carried one in the breastbone for nine generations."

She looked at the Council.

"Eighteen years ago it was taken from my body in the night. I woke up bleeding. I told this Council, and I was called a witch."

"It was taken while she slept," my mother said, fast. "It's a madwoman's story."

"I wasn't asleep, Judith," Brigid said. "I knew your step."

The hall was so silent I could hear the board creak overhead.

"What does a blood knife do?" the Elder asked slowly.
