Chapter 9: The Dawn Hearing

Nobody in the moon hall moved.

The Alpha stood with his hand still raised, and he turned it palm down, slowly.

"Say that again," he said.

Linnet stood on the dais with her chest heaving.

"Mother taught me how," she said. "When I was seven. She sat me on the bed and showed me how to shake, and how to make my claws come, and how to cry afterward and say I didn't remember."

Beside me, Tobin made a low, sick sound.

"She said if I ever said the wolf wasn't to blame, they'd send me away," Linnet said. "So I never said it."

"You hurt Rosalind for years," the Alpha said.

"I wanted to."

Two hundred people heard it and nobody spoke.

"She had everything. A name, a brother, a mate who looked at her. I had a locked door and a gray dress and a mother who hugged me only when I was bleeding." Her mouth twisted. "So I made it worse. I made her bleed instead."

Father stepped forward.

His face was the color of wet ash.

"That isn't true," he said. "Odette said you were ill. The healer said it."

"The healer treated what Mother told her to treat," said the old woman in the third row, and sat down hard.

Everyone looked at her.

"I never saw one episode," she said. "Not one. Every time I came, the girl was already calm, and Odette was holding her, telling me what had happened." She shook her head. "I wrote down what I was told."
