Chapter 15: Lukas at the Gate
Sam took the stairs two at a time.
I pulled on yesterday's jeans and followed him down to the porch.
Lukas was sitting on the hood of his car with his suit jacket across his knees.
He had not shaved.
His eyes were red, and his hair stuck up on one side.
He stood when he saw Sam, and then he saw me behind him in Sam's flannel shirt.
His whole face fell.
"Oh," he said.
"Get off my gravel," said Sam.
"I need to talk to my wife."
"She isn't your wife this morning. Get off my gravel."
"Sam," I said, and put a hand on his arm.
He was shaking, and it was not cold.
"Let him say it," I said. "Then he goes."
Lukas looked at the hand on Sam's arm.
He looked at my bare feet.
"You didn't waste any time," he said.
"You had a year," I said. "You wasted all of it."
He flinched.
"Leah, please.
"Mom called me at six this morning.
"She said I'd embarrassed the family in front of the county.
"She said the company is hers, because the shares are hers, and I'm done."
"Fired?" I said.
"She changed the locks on my office.
"She froze my cards.
"I slept in the car outside the club because I didn't know where else to go."
I waited for pity to arrive.
It didn't.
"You emptied our account," I said. "A hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
"It was Mom's idea."
"Of course it was."
"I'll put it back. All of it. I'll sign anything.
"Come home, Lee. We'll get lawyers. We'll tell people she lied to both of us."
"She lied to me," I said. "You helped."
He opened his mouth and shut it.
"You knew," I said.
"I knew she wanted us to separate.
"I didn't know about the party.
"I swear, Lee, I didn't know about the recording."
"But you knew about Delaney."
"That was real!" he said, too loudly. "That was mine!"
