Chapter 5: Maple Court

My mother's room at Maple Court had a window on the garden and a quilt from our old kitchen on the bed.

She was in her chair when I came in, with a cup of tea going cold on the tray.

"Lee-bug," she said. "You're early."

"I took the afternoon, Mom."

I kissed her hair and set a peach yogurt on the tray.

She looked pleased, and then she looked at me closely, which she only did on her good days.

"You've been crying."

"I haven't."

"Then somebody's made you angry." She patted the arm of the chair. "Sit."

I sat.

She held my hand in both of hers. Her fingers were thin and warm.

"Adele came on Sunday," she said. "Brought me lilies. I don't like lilies."

I smiled.

"Did she say why?"

"She sat right there and cried."

My mother frowned at the window.

"Said she was sorry. Said it would all be over soon, and she hoped I'd understand."

"Understand what, Mom?"

"I don't remember." Her eyes slid away, and the good minute went with them. "Is it Tuesday?"

"It's Tuesday."

"Then your father will want his dinner."

I let it go.

I told myself that Adele was kind, and my mother was confused, and lilies were just lilies.

Out in the hall, the administrator was waiting for me with a folder.

She had a pleasant, tired face, and she did not meet my eyes.

"Mrs. Halvorsen. I'm so sorry. I was hoping to talk to you before you went in."
