Chapter 15: The Kitchen Again

Eloy's POV

I saw her truck at my mother's gate at dusk and stopped my own in the road.

I had sat sixty yards from the end of her flight that morning with the engine off.

I had promised to be there.

I had not been brave enough to get out.

Now her truck was parked under my mother's cottonwood with its door still ticking from the heat.

I left mine in the road and walked up through the zaguan.

The kitchen door stood half open, and the light from the lamp lay across the tiles.

I stopped before I reached it.

I did not decide to listen.

My feet decided.

"I wanted him gone," my mother was saying.

"Who?" Adelina said.

"The boy. Before there was a boy. I wanted the woman gone because her child would have Epifanio's hands, and I would have to look at them every day."

A chair scraped.

"I was wrong twice," my mother said. "I was wrong to send her away with an envelope. And I was wrong to let my son bury his father believing he was a saint."
