Chapter 11: The Morning After

"I was going to tell you," Keir said, "before either of us touched the other."

I slid off the desk and found my dress.

"Tell me what?"

"That I won't say the rest in this room." He buttoned what was left of his shirt. "I want you to hear it at the stone, where he is."

"You said after the wedding."

"I said that when I thought I could stand it. I can't." His eyes held mine. "Thursday. Come with me. I'll tell you all of it."

"Rule three says I never follow you on a Thursday."

"Rule three was for a girl I hadn't met yet."

"So you break your own rules."

"I broke them when you got out of the Jeep."

I stared at him.

"You saw me."

"The whole way from Weston."

"You let me follow you."

"I wanted to see how far you'd go."

I picked up a button from the floor and put it in his palm.

"That's rude," I said.

"I know."

He walked me upstairs and didn't touch me again until my door.

Then he kissed my forehead once, quickly, as if he had been given permission.

I slept alone, and badly, and woke up smiling at the ceiling.

At breakfast Finn looked at my face, then at his brother's, then at the shirt Keir was wearing, which was a different shirt.

"No," he said.

"Eat your eggs," Keir said.

"You've got a button missing."

"Two."

"I'm sitting right here," I said.
