Chapter 5: The Invitation

I put on a navy dress from the closet, with the tag still hanging off the sleeve, and went down to the gate.

Four photographers stood in the road with their lenses up.

Behind the bars, in the gray light, stood Porter and Bree.

Bree's eyes were swollen and wet.

Her makeup was perfect.

She held a cream envelope in both hands, and as I reached the gate she lifted her chin for the cameras.

"Milly," she said. "Thank God."

"How did you find me?"

"Your mother told Porter's mother." She sniffed. "We came to make peace. I can't lose my best friend over one bad night."

"One night," I said.

"Mistakes happen."

"It was eight months."

A shutter clicked.

Bree held out the envelope. "Read it. Please."

I opened it.

It was a wedding invitation, thick and gold-edged, with my own name written across the top in calligraphy.

Millicent Alden, Maid of Honor.

"You still want me to stand next to you," I said.

"You were always going to be," Bree said, and cried a little harder. "Porter wants it too."

I looked at Porter.

He hadn't shaved. He looked at the road.

"Porter," I said, loud enough for the lenses. "What time did you change the locks on the condo?"

He lifted his head.

"Milly, this isn't the place."

"Your doorman says it was an hour before the toast. That's why my clothes were on the sidewalk in the rain."
