Chapter 7: The Run Report
"Held for psychosis," Cormac repeated.
"I was never held." I dropped the papers on the blanket. "I was on so much morphine I thought the ceiling tiles were crackers."
"What happened?"
"Third night in the ICU, I asked a nurse to call my mom. I gave her a Columbus number." I swallowed. "It doesn't exist here. Nothing I knew existed here."
"And?"
"And I cried and told her I wasn't from this place. She called a psychiatrist. He came once, for ten minutes. He wrote that it was the drugs. Then he left."
"Who knew about that?"
"The nurse. The psychiatrist." I looked at the wall. "And Valerie. She was sitting by my bed."
Cormac picked up the petition and read paragraph six himself.
His thumb pressed a dent into the paper.
"I wrote a run report that night," he said. "I remember what's in it."
"What's in it?"
"Everything. It's what we do. Times, vitals, what the patient said." He looked at me. "You signed nothing in the ambulance, because you couldn't hold a pen. But you're the patient. You can request a copy."
"Today?"
"Headquarters opens at nine. Sign me a release and I'll drive it down myself."
He came back a little after one with a certified copy in a plastic sleeve, and we read it at the kitchen table.
"Pt is a 20 y/o female, multiple stab wounds to L flank and L forearm."
"Pt alert and oriented times four. Pt answered all questions appropriately."
"Pt sang along with EMS to maintain consciousness."
I laughed, and it came out wet.
"You put that in the report."
"It was clinically relevant," Cormac said. "Your pressure went up when you sang. I was going to make you do the whole album."
Then I got to the bottom of the page.
"Suspect detained at scene by BPD. Suspect stated in presence of EMS: 'Val said she'd be alone.'"
