Chapter 15: What the Don Heard

The Don's room was at the end of the cardiac ward, behind a door with a capo on each side.

Neither of them stopped us this time.

The security man had been busy.

My father lay propped on three pillows with wires on his chest and a drip in his arm.

He looked smaller than he had on the sidewalk.

His eyes went to me, and then to Rocco, and his mouth thinned.

"You," he said to Rocco. "Get out."

"No, sir."

"I slapped you in front of a hundred people."

"You did."

"And you come to my bed."

"She asked me to," Rocco said. "I'd have come anyway."

The Don's hand lifted off the blanket, shaking.

A doctor in a white coat stood at the foot of the bed with a clipboard and a face.

"Mr. Gattuso, the pills in your nightstand were sugar," he said. "Your own security man brought me the real bottle an hour ago. If you had taken sugar for another two weeks, you would not have woken up."

"Adriana filled my pillbox," my father said. "She's done it for years."

"Then someone changed what she put in it."

"Nobody changed it."

The doctor looked at me.

I stepped to the bed and took my father's hand, the one with the IV.

It was cold and heavy, with a gold ring on it.

"Dad."

It was the first time I'd called him that.

His eyes filled.

"I'm going to tell you something," I said. "You won't want to hear it. Please let me finish."
