Chapter 10: Coffee Morning

Saturday morning, the mothers from our childbirth class met at the Arvada rec center for coffee.

There were twenty of them, with strollers parked along the wall and babies on every lap.

It was the room where I had learned to breathe through pain.

Taryn had texted me on Friday: Come tomorrow. Everyone's asking about you. Bring Charlie.

I called my lawyer first.

"Don't," she said, when I told her what I wanted to do. "Wait till court. One more week and we hold all of it at once."

"She's been in my kitchen for six weeks."

"I know."

"She held him this morning while I cried in the shower."

"Libby."

"I'm going to play it," I said. "I'm sorry. I can't sit across from her and drink coffee."

My lawyer was silent for a moment.

"Then use the recording only," she said. "Don't say anything you can't prove. Don't touch her. And Libby, if you're wrong about what you heard, I don't want to know."

"I'm not wrong."

"Then go."

I carried Charlie into the community room at ten, with my phone in my pocket and a borrowed speaker in the diaper bag.

The air smelled of burnt coffee and baby powder.

"Libby!"

Taryn crossed the room with her arms out.

She was wearing the gray cardigan.

"You look so much better. Look at you, you're glowing. Everybody, Libby's here!"

Twenty faces turned toward me.

A mother in a yellow sweater stood up with her baby on her hip.

"Oh my God, honey, we heard about the court thing," she said. "Are you okay?"

"I'm okay," I said. "Thank you for asking."

I set the speaker on the nearest table.
