Chapter 22: The Offer
Mara's POV
The moon was full again, and the terrace of the King's hall was crowded again.
This time I did not stand on the right side alone.
I stood on the stone in my dark green coat with no chain at my throat, and the Black Forest patrol stood in a rank behind me, forty wolves in worn leather.
Elias was at the head of them.
He did not look at me.
That was the rule of the night, and he kept it.
Across the terrace, in the Holt rows, Bastian stood among the elders in a plain grey coat.
He had no iron ring on his hand.
The elders had taken it that morning, and the whole valley knew.
He was looking at me.
I looked away.
"Court of the Moon," called the herald. "The King will speak."
The King rose from his black chair.
"The Black Forest is cut from Holt," he said. "It is a pack of its own, sworn to the crown. Its Alpha is Elias Riordan."
A sound ran through the terrace, low and approving.
"A pack requires a Luna," said the King. "In the history of the north, a Luna has been named by a King, and the King has put the chain around her neck."
My stomach tightened.
"My father did it that way. I will not." He raised one hand. "Mara Hallowell. Step forward."
I stepped forward.
The King stood above me, and the moon was bright on the side of his face.
"You commanded the Black Forest wall as a Luna when you had no right to," he said. "The patrol followed you, and so did the Holt hall. The Court asks you now, will you be the Luna of the Black Forest?"
It was a fair question.
It was also not a question.
