Chapter 17: Linus Cooks
"Nobody touches the stove," Linus said. "Nobody opens the oven. Nobody tells me the chicken looks dry."
"It looks dry," Bram said.
"It's resting."
"It looks like it's resting in a coffin."
Linus pointed a wooden spoon at him.
"Out of my kitchen."
"It's Mom's kitchen."
"Then out of Mom's kitchen, with respect."
I sat on a stool at the end of the long table, watching him work.
It was six in the evening, and the whole room smelled of butter and rosemary and warm bread.
I had never been in a kitchen with a family in it before.
The woman who raised me and I had eaten at the diner counter, or on the bus, or standing at the sink with one fork between us.
Linus slid a plate in front of me.
It held a grilled cheese sandwich, cut into four triangles, with the crusts left on.
"What's this?"
"Your lunch, every day, for the entire year you were four," he said.
"Mom says you screamed if the crusts came off."
"I was ten. I thought you were insane."
I took a bite.
It tasted of burnt butter and the best bread in the world.
"I'm not crying," I said.
"It's onion," Linus said gently.
The back door banged, and Alister came in with a bag of oranges and a bottle of wine.
