Chapter 22: Cuffs
Duane stopped so fast his loafers skidded on the landing.
"Mr. Pendergast," the detective said. "Going somewhere?"
He turned around.
Breck was standing in the doorway behind him, filling it completely.
Duane put his hands up.
The detective read him his rights on the landing.
Burglary. Conspiracy. Fraud. Something about the permit that made Rand smile.
Then she did something I'll love her for until I die.
"Not the back stairs," she told the officers. "We'll go out the front."
They walked him back through the dining room.
Through the stage light, past the ballot table, down the whole middle aisle, in cuffs, with his pink face turned to the floor.
Nobody said anything.
Two hundred people just watched him go.
The committee chair went out behind him with an officer's hand on his shoulder, sobbing.
Breck finally let go of the doorframe.
The lights came back on at 8:58. Abram had gone down to the basement and thrown the main himself.
