Chapter 31: The Sofa

Breck's POV

Wednesday is my night for the three a.m. feeding, and I'd never once been late.

I was up before the monitor finished its first crackle.

Hazel was already furious, with her fists up and her face red.

"I know," I whispered, lifting her out of the crib. "I know, I know. Life is brutal. Your uncle Breck has your bottle."

I'm not her uncle. Nobody's been able to tell me what I am.

I carried her down the dark hall to the kitchen and warmed the bottle in a pan.

Then I sat on a stool with her tucked into my arm.

She latched on and went quiet.

She was so small that her whole head fit in my palm.

I looked at her hand on the bottle.

My hands are huge. Everybody says so. I've broken three drywall knives just holding them.

Her fingers were tiny and pink and perfect, and I had no idea whose they were.

I'd been doing that math since June.

I never told anyone.

I'd stare at her ears and think, those are mine, God help her.

Then I'd see her frown at nothing, and think, that's Abram, that's the exact look.
