We held the wire sheet for four days.
Rand wouldn't let us use it until a bank record backed it up.
Duane could be lying, and Rand didn't walk into rooms on a maybe.
He had a subpoena drafted by Wednesday.
On Thursday evening, before he could file it, the doorbell rang.
I opened the door with Hazel on my hip.
Dorothea stood on the porch in a cream linen suit with a white envelope in her gloved hand.
The thin lawyer stood one step behind her.
"Good evening, dear," she said. "I'm sorry to come unannounced. It couldn't wait."
I didn't move out of the doorway.
Behind me, Abram came down the hall with Breck and Rand at his shoulders.
"Mother."
"Abram. May I come in?"
It was his house, and his call.
He looked at me.
"Let her say it here," I said. "In the great room. All of us."
Dorothea sat on the long gray sofa, with her handbag in her lap.
She hadn't asked for tea, and nobody offered it.
"I want to be gentle," she said. "I've wanted to be gentle with this for two weeks."
