Chapter 21: The Red Dress
"Tell her I'll see her when I choose," I said into the phone.
"She says she'll wait, ma'am."
"Then she can wait."
I hung up.
Benedict was watching me.
"You don't want to go down?"
"No."
"Then neither do I."
He pulled the blanket up over my shoulder and turned out the light.
At seven the next evening, the red dress hung on the back of his study door.
Skye had hung it there after we picked it out together.
It had cost more than I made in two weeks, and I had paid for it myself.
It was the color of a stop sign, cut low in the back and slit up the left thigh.
It fit me.
Skye did my hair.
She pinned it up in a loose twist, and pulled out two strands to curl against my neck, and stepped back.
"Oh," she said, in a funny small voice. "Oh, Hal."
"Too much?"
"It's exactly enough."
The Smurthwaite Development gala filled the glass atrium of a tower on the river.
There were four hundred guests, a string quartet, and a ceiling of white lights that threw the whole crowd into gold.
I walked in beside Benedict, a half step ahead, with my hand on his sleeve only because I wanted it there.
Conversation hushed as we crossed the marble.
A man with a silver mustache whispered to his wife.
Two women near the bar had phones in their hands, and I knew exactly which video they were looking at.
A heavyset man in a tuxedo came bearing down on us.
"The chairman of the board," Benedict murmured in my ear. "Don't smile."
