Chapter 23: Her Page
I gave him the page on Sunday morning, folded in half, across a table in his kitchen.
He took it without a word.
He read it standing at the counter, with the sun on the marble and a pot of coffee going cold.
I watched his face while his eyes moved down the lines.
The page was in my handwriting, black ink, with two things crossed out.
It said:
Terms. Hallie Whincup and Benedict Smurthwaite.
One. I say out loud what I want, and so does he.
Two. In his bedroom he sets the order and the pace.
I can end any night with one word, and he never sulks about it.
Three. Outside that door we are equals, and he asks me before he decides anything that touches me.
Four. When either of us says no, it is over for the night, and nobody explains.
Five. Preston and Kendall are never at our table.
Six. He never writes me a rule. I write the rules.
Seven. I kneel when I decide to. Not before.
Eight is left blank.
He read to the end, and then he went back to the top and read it again.
"You've left eight blank," he said.
"I'm saving it."
"For what?"
"For when I know."
He set the page down on the counter and put his palm flat on it.
"Where do I sign?"
"Not yet."
"When?"
"When we've tried it."
