Chapter 10: The Order

The Lincoln sat at the end of Allens Avenue with two holes in its rear door.

The driver stood beside it, a big gray-haired man in a leather jacket, smoking with a hand that wouldn't hold still.

"Nobody hurt," he said, when Rosalia ran up. "They came out of a dark pickup. Two shots. Then gone."

"Plates?"

"None."

Rosalia put her hand on the steel and looked at the holes.

She didn't say a word.

I watched her jaw work.

"It was a warning," I said.

"Yes."

"For you or for the car?"

"For whoever thinks they're sitting in it."

She turned and walked back to the Buick.

I followed her.

Tullio was awake when we got to Federal Hill, in the kitchen with the same black coffee and his cardigan buttoned wrong.

He heard the story without a change in his face.

"Corrado doesn't send a driver a warning," he said. "He sends it to me."

"You should let me put men on the house," Rosalia said.

"I have men. I don't need more men." He looked at me. "I need to know about the fifth test."

"The fifth?"

"The fourth is done. You tore up a deed in front of five capos. I couldn't have staged it better." He coughed. "The fifth is tomorrow."

"What is it?"

"There is a foreman at the container terminal in Quonset. Eleven years on the docks. He is trusted with the pension fund for the longshoremen." Tullio set down his cup. "Three hundred thousand dollars is gone from it. Everyone says he took it."

"Did he?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

The old man smiled thinly.

"I want his hands broken," he said. "Both of them. I want him to say where the money is. You will do it tomorrow morning. Alone."

The kitchen went quiet.

I looked at Rosalia.

She was staring into her coffee.

"I'm not a man who breaks people's hands," I said.

"Then you fail."
