Chapter 6: Her Own Hand
"Come here," Rocco said to Bianca.
Her tears stopped for half a second.
"Roc?"
"Come here. Let me see your face."
She walked to him with her injured arm held out in front of her.
He took her chin between two fingers and tilted it toward the glass roof, where the morning light was strongest.
The red mark on her cheek was clear.
There was one wide print along the top, and four narrower marks stacked beneath it.
Rocco turned her face a little to the left and a little to the right.
"A thumb on top," he said. "Four fingers underneath."
Nobody spoke.
"That is the mark of a backhand, from a hand held in front of the body and swung toward the cheek."
"Roc, I don't..."
"My wife was standing six feet away from you with her hands empty," Rocco said. "She could not have made it from there."
He let go of her chin.
"You can make it on yourself in two seconds, if you do it with the back of your own hand."
Bianca covered her face.
"No. That's not it. I was trying to dodge her, I turned my head..."
"And the knife," Rocco said.
He bent and picked up the silver dagger by its handle, careful not to touch the blade.
"If Camilla had done this, with the skill I watched her use on a Beretta yesterday, this would have gone through your forearm and out the other side."
"Not a scrape the length of a finger."
He turned the little blade over under the light.
"If you still want to tell the story, I'll have my men lift the prints off the handle. We'll see whose are on it."
