Chapter 7: What He Did

Maia took Delaney into the quiet room at the back of the clinic.

I started to follow.

Delaney turned in the doorway.

"Alone."

"No," said Maia. "He stays."

"This is between women."

"This is between three people, and one of them is my husband." Maia held the door open. "Say whatever you came to say with him in the room, or don't say it."

Delaney looked at me, and then at the floor.

She sat down on a treatment table with her hands pressed between her knees.

The paper cover crackled under her.

Maia took the stool in front of her.

I leaned against the wall and kept my mouth shut.

"I'm not here to fight," Delaney said.

"Okay."

"I threw a drink at you."

"You did."

"I'm sorry." She said it to the table. "That's not a thing I do. I don't usually do things like that."

"Okay," Maia said again, more gently.

Delaney wiped her nose with the cuff of her hoodie.

"Dalton ended it last night. In the hotel bar at the airport."

"Why?"

"My father saw the wedding video. He froze my cards this morning and cut off the line at the hotel company." She laughed, a thin, ugly sound. "Dalton took one look at my phone and said the engagement was a nice idea while it lasted."

"I'm sorry," Maia said.

"He told me he only asked me because he knew Wes would hear about it."

I straightened.

"Hear about it?"

"He said it was a good way to get you to show up. Like a hook on a fishing line." Delaney's mouth twisted. "He knew I was lying to myself. He just let me do it, because it was convenient. And I can't even be angry, because I was doing the exact same thing to you."
