Chapter 17: Three in the Morning
Alexis's POV
At three in the morning I found my brother where June said I would.
He was standing at the office window with the lamp off.
The yard lay silver and empty in front of him, and the road beyond it, and the gate.
I came in and sat on the arm of the sofa.
He did not turn around.
"You want to hit me too," he said.
"I thought about it."
"Go ahead."
"I'd rather you looked at me."
He turned.
His eyes were red, and I remembered, from a long time ago, that he had never been able to cry quietly.
"I'm sorry," Dane said.
He said it plainly.
He did not say but, and he did not say Terrence, and he did not say the land.
"I let a man decide what you got to know. I let him tell me you didn't want me. I believed him because it was easier than driving down Alder Street and finding out. That's all it was. I was a coward."
"Yes," I said.
He nodded slowly.
"I'm going to stand up on Monday and say it in front of the town. And I'm selling Dad's Harley to pay the first part of the note."
"No."
"Lexi."
"That's the only thing of his you kept."
"It's a bike."
"It's your bike. You rebuilt it with him in the garage when you were fourteen."
"It's worth thirty thousand."
"It's worth more than that and you know it."
I got up and went to him.
I put my arms around his ribs, which I had not done since I was twenty-three, and I held on.
He made a sound I will not describe.
"We do it together," I said into his jacket. "I'm a bookkeeper. Give me the ledger and the note and the agreement, and let me see what's actually owed."
