Chapter 24: Back In
Annis came down the mountain on Wednesday afternoon in the back of the milk truck.
She climbed out at the end of our dirt road with a tin under her arm and a look on her face.
"The gates have two council guards on them," she said. "They've got your picture. Both of them."
"So I can't get in."
"You can't get in through the gates." She opened the tin. It was full of cardamom scones. "Eat. You look like a ghost."
Caspian had gone back up that morning.
He had to.
If the King stayed away from Greyling for a week, Raife would tell the Assembly he'd run off with his human like his father ran off over the ridge.
I could feel him the whole time.
A steady warmth to the north.
"There's another way in," Annis said. "There's always another way in. Omegas know all of them."
"Which way?"
"The lake."
At ten that night we left my pickup at the public landing on the far shore.
Annis untied a rowboat that wasn't hers.
"I'll bring it back," she told the dock.
