Chapter 8: The Tempting Brother

Nico drove a silver coupe with the heat turned high, and he put a coffee into my hand before I had my seat belt fastened.

"Cream, no sugar," he said. "Carmine used to complain that you took it like a nun."

"You remember that?"

"I remember everything about you."

He pulled out of the garage and into Lake Shore Drive.

He kept one hand on the wheel and the other on the gearshift, easy and quick.

I held the cup and watched his hands.

The left one turned the key.

The left one signaled.

The left one lifted the cup to his mouth when he drank.

"You're left-handed," I said.

"Half of Papa's side is. It's why we have such terrible handwriting." He smiled at the road. "You looked at the photograph."

My stomach dropped.

"How do you know about the photograph?"

"I know a man who works the front desk of your building. He told me what the doorman saw."

Nico shrugged apologetically.

"Cassie, I've been trying to protect my brother's marriage for five years, and it isn't easy."

"May I tell you what I know?"

"Tell me."

"The man in that bed was one of Papa's. A soldier. Papa told him to do it."

I said nothing.

"You've seen how my father talks about you. He never wanted you in that house."

"A girl from Bridgeport, no family, no money, no connections."

"He wanted Carmine married to the daughter of a rival family in Cicero. When you got pregnant, it became impossible."

"So he hired a woman to sleep with my husband."

"He hired a man to be Carmine in a bed and a woman to be seen with him." Nico's voice dropped, gentle.
